Is it just my perception or has the quality of fundy we get through here
declined over the years? It seemed to me that at one time some fundies
could at least formulate a minimal argument to justify their occultism.
Now it seems that they're no longer even willing to try.

rj> If you ever get a chance to chat up one of Bill Riccio's boys
rj> (the leader of the Birmingham, AL-based Aryan National Front),
FR> I wonder if they class as either Pagani or Wicca. I'm sure to most

rj> I'm pretty sure they're not Wiccan.

The difference between Pagani and Wicca are pretty vague. It might be difficult
to defend anyone who worships Odin being considered a Pagan. Odin, Zeus,
Isis et al. being worshipped, I think, doesn't lock-in a solid determination.
Allah, Zeus, cows and Jesus aren't as vaguely worshipped.

FR> people they do. As for 'chatting up' one of these
FR> clowns, only at a distance, man. I have a
FR> zero shit tolerance policy for racial bigotry and
FR> sex bigotry -- they're a couple of my bugaboos.

rj> Y'just sort of clap your hand over your face after a minute
rj> and say, "Uh, yeah. Well look, izzat the time? I've gotta

When I go to any kind of gathering, I always have my own safety
in mind. (I live near Los Angeles.) I doubt I would ever find
myself among a bunch of nuts by accident.

First: I checked my archives for Aryan National Front. I found nothing.
I will check the Ken McVey archives since they're far more extensive than
mine and take the chance to update my stuff. Hopefully McVey's Almanac has
materials on these clowns.

Did you ever see a PBS special called, "Blood on the Face?"

rj> Specifically, the ones that believe in
rj> the benevolence of Nature. LIE!

FR> I've never heard a Pagan or Wiccan make that claim, though.

rj> Perhaps it's more common among SewAgers.

Man, it's getting difficult to tell who are what since the boundaries are
so blurry.

FR> Have you been watching the National Organization of Women and the
FR> problem that, oh, what's her name... Marilyn Kagan? caused when NOW
FR> tried to make woman battering a _racial_ problem based specifically
FR> upon these statistics?

rj> I wonder why they would try to splinter the problem.

They saw that playing the race card makes their agenda reach more people
than if they had just stuck to the fact that woman beating is pandemic to
all.

FR> NOW is making woman battering a racial problem -- a black problem --
FR> and Kagan made some comment about not having the time for blacks who
FR> would do that, saying that woman beating knows no racial boundaries.

rj> Eh? Was she suggesting _not_ turning it into a racial problem,
rj> or just not considering such cases?

She said she "had no time" for politisizing or talking to black women who
wanted to make it a race problem. She wanted to keep focused on the actual
problem rather than drag race into it. Her words were taken to mean that
she had no time for blacks.

FR> Also, I have to wonder if you honestly think stateing facts such as
FR> there being more Christians in prison than atheists is itself a
FR> bigotry. Are you willing to defend that position?

rj> Not sure. How do you mean? Stating the facts
rj> isn't bigotry. Making the prejudgment is.

David's comment, as I recall, stated facts exactly yet you appeared to accuse
him of bigotry.

FR> You couln't possibly be more wrong. The glorification of war started
FR> to come to an end some 35 years ago. Nationalism was no longer a
FR> justification for fighting in foreign lands for vague, ill-defined
FR> rhetoric of "saving democracy."

rj> What I mean about the social problem is that the anti-war
rj> crowd used to harass soldiers and spit on them because they
rj> went to Nam.

I can't agree that that was a "social problem." I won't condone the harassment
and physical attacks which were commonly enacted against returning soldiers
yet I _would_ condone the protests and question the morality of people who
would do whatever their political masters dictate against vague, ill-defined,
ambiguous threats for vague, ill-defined, ambiguous "Democracy" or "the
American way of life."

Fighting Hitler and even getting Saddam out of Kuwaite was justified and
I can see the morality of killing innocent people to get to the tyrant.
Killing innocent people just because one's political masters hate Communism
is undefendable and worthy of vocal protests.

rj> Just like the despots who send their peasant farmers to fight
rj> for them (don't think_they_ haven't been filled with a bunch
rj> of jingoistic crap, either),

Yes, "fighting the great Satan" instead of "fighting Communism."

No difference. Both are lies.

rj> I don't think the draftees felt they had much choice about going.

Rumor has it they were to be shot if they refused. On our end there were
other options. Dodgeing the draft was, in my opinion, the high moral position
-- when done for ideological grounds rather than cowardice.

rj> Rather than just confining the harassment to the decision-
rj> makers in that quagmire, the anti-war element, caught up in
rj> their own jingoism, just wanted to attack _anything_ they saw
rj> as a symbol of that war.

That's because, just as in war, the reasonable targets hide behind their
troops. People protest every war the US gets involved in (and some the
US doesn't get involved in) by mustering at parks near the White House but
it's far easier to attack anyone in uniform when they're on the street or
at the airport. The President doesn't set foreign policy in reguards to
war at any rate; the Pentagon does. Protesting against the right people
is damn difficult.

At least in the United States it desn't get one shot.

FR> capable of selling their agenda to the American public. Rather than
FR> telling the American public that they're "fighting Saddam" to
FR> "reinstall democracy in Kuwaite," they'll have to admit they did it
FR> for cheap oil.

rj> Of course. However, It sounded a lot like David used some words
rj> that were deliberately offensive to a lot of people--

HE TOLD THE UNDENIABLE TRUTH. Call it an offense, call it bigotry, call
it jello pudding... it doesn't alter the fact that war has become sanitized
-- for the United States. The glory days are returning, I think. Bet you
a buck more kids today think war is something glorious than the number of
kids 15 years ago.

rj> not just a cluster of armchair commandos with hawkish
rj> hardons. I just don't see where _he_ thought the flame
rj> on him was so unjustified.

It wasn't a "flame" against him, it was a threat of physical violence for
speaking the truth. David has been in FidoNet for many years and getting
flamed is just part of the fun. Getting threats of physical violence from
ideologues MUST be treated seriously.

FR> Now I ___SUPPORT___ "human rights actions" in places like Bosnia
FR> except that I would rather like our government to clearly define their
FR> role.

rj> Agreed.

I'm surprised.  }:-}

rj> Actions without objectives are stupid;

Such as "fighting Communism?"

rj> of course you would _think_ our govt would learn that, but
rj> then that's also why people keep re-electing them--because
rj> *voters* never learn.

Most voters can't discern fact from fiction.

rj> They'll let the GOP plunge the social fabric into the shitter

fl> Actually, my all time favorite philosopher is

FR> I've got several of compilations of his work. I don't like them
FR> because it seems he has a religious following who have deified him and
FR> made his work scripture. Hell, one of the books I have even numbers
FR> the sentences.

rj> Actual sentences, or paragraphs?

Both. "Beyond Good and Evil, Prelude to a Philosopgy of the Future" translated
and commentary by Walter Kaufman, published by Cintage Books, a division
of Random House, Inc, in New York.

Chapter four, verse 65a: "One is most dishonest to one's god:
he is not _allowed_ to sin."

That's the end of verse 65a.

Chapter four, verse 67: "Love of _one_ is a barbarism; for it
is exercised at the expense of all others. The log of God
(sic), too."

Then "A Nietzsche Reader," translated by R. J. Hollingdale, published by
Penguin Classics in 1977.

Numbering the sentences and phrases in each chapter, starting with verse
1 in each, seems to me to be something akin to turning Nietzsche's writings
into scripture.

rj> Nietzsche would've taken a cursory glance at the Nazi Party
rj> and pronounced them Untermenschen. Pure slave morality, under
rj> the guise of a master race.

That's my opinion as well.

FR> off of the appartment complex's window, back to the car's windshield,
FR> then back to the satelite. KCET then played the computer segregated
FR> voice tracks of individual conversations pulled from the mix using
FR> what amounts to powerful electronic voodoo magic.

rj> I take it they simply used the Doppler deviations from
rj> the vibrations of the windowpane?

Yes, while takeing out a bewildering variety of noise from vibration on
the car's windshield and the natural expansion and contraction caused by
heat and puffs of wind, vehicles passing, wobbles in the Earth/Satelite
orbit...

rj> That does seem almost unbelievable.

Not when thinking about towed sonar arrays and the massive computers used
in 688 attack submarines needed to extract frequency depictions while filtering
biologicals and geologicals. Sonar systems are so good that detecting submarines
by the noise they occlude at 30 miles is typical. The computer technology
probably is much the same for satelite LASER systems. My guess is that
the satelite preprocesses and compresses, then sends the glut down to be
processed on massive computers.

rj> Sensitivity on that level isn't really hard to imagine,
rj> since SETI equipment can pick up ET radiation in the
rj> picowatt range.

Leptons are far easier to detect and amplify electronically than pressure
waves caused by minutely heated air, though. Looking at the problem in
terms of thermonics, all a voice does is introduce heat in a regulated way
into a general direction which expands and attenuates as a function of the
square of the distance. The minutely heated air impacts the window pane
causing it to heat up. A sound system channeling audio between two panes
like in the White House effectively makes the task of isolating voice-generated
heat patterns impossible when the sound system is generating white noise.

rj> It's just the anomalous readings, such as temperature
rj> changes which would alter the windshield, or even a
rj> car door slam in the space next to the car, not to mention
rj> something obvious like 22,000 miles worth of atmospheric
rj> layers (or are we talking about low orbit, which is still
rj> a couple hundred miles)--seems there'd be a lot of things
rj> to queer readings.

It's all a very difficult problem. The problem is made easier by employing
parallel beams.

KCET's show played hiss and pop with undifferenciated noise which could
reasonably be identified as voices. After computer processing they played
the result and isolated conversations could be heard.

rj> You were talking about molecular sniffers--I read about one
rj> that was to be sold for business use to sniff out drugs.

Puppy dogs!

rj> It didn't pay off, because the sensitivity was so high
rj> it *always* registered coke and pot or whatever. Seems
rj> the thing could detect something like 10 molecules in
rj> the space of 10,000 cu.ft.

Dogs are far cheaper as well and law-abideing people watching their luggage
sniffed out by fuzzy dogs treat the near-invasion with affection when dogs
are used, I think. Put a guy with unidentifiable electronic gagets sniffing
the luggage and perhaps some animosity might be felt.

Evaporating drugs, though, give off less molecular clues than does an out-gassing
decomposing body. I'm not sure but I suspect that it would be easier to
detect a decomposing body from a helicopter than detecting a jetisoned stash
of cocain.

It's strange that you have elected to keep these "words" of your deity constructs

Why are you so selfish?

I think the guys holding the dog's choke chain wasn't trying to disengage

There's a lie. Historians employing science don't make such claims.

Are you trying to lie-up some evidence for the validity of the classical
Christanic mythologies? Is that what you're doing? If so, that's rather
silly inasmuch as the myths are scientifically debunked.

From- The Inquisition - Hammer of Heresy

Pub. by Dorset Press, a division of Marboro Books Corp.,

Foundation pages 41-42

Peter's death on 6 April seems to have provoked an immediate and violent
reaction on the part of Innocent IV, who announced perhaps the most terrible
of all Bulls in the history of the Inquisition on 15 May 1252, ÔAd ExtirpandaÕ
.

ÔAd ExtirpandaÕ

Innocent IV, like his predecessors in the great line of lawyer-popes, Innocent
III and Gregory IX, was a master of canon law, and even wrote
a famous commentary on it. His pontificate was dominated by the final
stage of the long struggle for power between Frederick II and the papacy.
After Frederick's death in 1250, the political situation in Italy changed
dramatically and a rapid succession of Bulls to the Dominican provincials
gave fresh momentum to the Inquisition. It was also at this point that
the Franciscans became involved as inquisitors on a large scale. This
frenetic activity of Innocent IV culminated with the Bull ÔAd ExtirpandaÕ,
'to extirpate', which 'sought to render the civil power completely subservient
to the Inquisition, and prescribed the extirpation of heresy as the chief
duty of the state'.

'Ad Extirpanda' effectively established a police state in Italy and is
noteworthy for having introduced the use of torture into inquisitorial
procedure, and for explicitly condoning burning alive at the stake for
relapsed heretics. Resistance amongst secular lords was overcome by
a brilliant diplomatic manoeuvre: Innocent incorporated the Sicilian
Constitutions of 1239 into a subsidiary Bull, ÔCum adversus haereticamÕ,
thus turning Frederick IIÕs legislation against the heretics and Ghibellines
that the Emperor had previously protected.

This terrible weapon provided for:

I. torture as a means of obtaining confessions;

2. the death penalty at the stake;

3. a police force at the service of the Office of the Faith
[that is, the Inquisition];

4. the preaching of a crusade against heretics in Italy with the same
indulgences and privileges as in a crusade to the Holy Land;*

5. the extension of the principle of confiscation to the heirs of heretics.

Later Bulls served to refine this legislation, and it is interesting to
see amendments being made constantly in response to specific demands or
problems that arose in the work of inquisitors: personal letters written
by the Pope carry the force of Bulls. But Innocent IV had, with this
single stroke, instituted a system of repression that was then honed by
Alexander IV (1254-1261), Urban IV (1261-1265), and Clement IV (1265-1268),
himself an ex-inquisitor, and finally codified by Boniface VIII in the
ÔLiber SextusÕ of 1298. The provisions of the Bull were accorded theological
respectability by St Thomas Aquinas in his ÔSumma TheologicaÕ.

Super Extirpatione (30 March 1254)

In 1246 Innocent IV had officially called upon the Franciscans to join
the Dominicans in the work of the Inquisition. As individuals, they
had been closely involved from the beginning; we have already met Gerhard,
follower of Conrad of Marburg, and it seems that Blessed Pietro d'Arcagnano
was an inquisitor in Milan as early as 1234. But, perhaps pressed by necessity
and seeking fresh impetus in the Inquisition, Innocent IV divided Italy
into two inquisitorial provinces with the Bull ÔSuper ExtirpationeÕ:
the Franciscans were to have central and north-east Italy (mainly Tuscany,
Umbria and the Veneto), while the Dominicans presided over the remainder
of the country.

(Footnote)
*For example, in April 1253 Innocent ordered the Dominicans of the Roman
province to preach a crusade against the heretics of Lombardy and Tuscany.
Padua was sacked by these ÔcrusadersÕ [cf. Lea ÔInquisition in the Middle
Ages, vol. ii, pp. 226-7].

Church law was contained in five books of bulls and decrees edited by Raymond
of Penafort in 1234. Book V was called ÔDe HaereticusÕ, and contained
the principle constitutions of the Inquisitions.

All the later bulls, including those of Innocent IV, were added
by Boniface VIII in 1298. Hence its title, the Ôsixth bookÕ. -END

AS> Telling the faults of some of His followers
AS> is not slandering Christ, John.

Wonderful that you feel this way !

AS> Torquemada was the Chief Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition.
AS> An avowed Christian, ...........
JP> Torquemada was a pope follower. Not a Christ follower.
AS> Um. And the Sanhedrin were Caiphas followers and not Moses followers?

As a matter of scriptural fact-

"for IF you believed Moses,
[THEN] you would believe Me; for he wrote of Me." John 5:46

The Sanhedrin that condemned Jesus
WERE more "Caiphas followers"
than they were "Moses followers."

AS> It's interesting to deny, and I truly think
AS> Jesus would deny Torquemada like a SHOT.

Are you sure ? Now don't go too far out on a limb.

Sure you aren't being a judgmental, mean spirited bigot ?

Maybe you HATE Spanish Roman Catholics ?

Mighty mean of you to express such condeming thoughts
toward this much maligned servant of the pope's "CHURCH."

AS> But I cannot say he was not trying to follow the
AS> teachings of Christ, as he [mis]understood them.

Maybe Satan is just a misunderstood person
who really has our best interest at heart.

JP> To Christ followers the difference is significant..
AS> Which besides you, consists of...who?

Jesus hasn't made me privy to that information.

Among your fellow members of organized religion,
do you have a list of those who in fact are guided by Christ ?

JP> To heathens the difference is denied.
AS> Oh, many unbelievers see the difference
AS> between Torquamada and Mother Teresa.

Yet in a profound way, Torquamada and Mother Teresa
are THE SAME. Though in different ways, they both serve[d]
to bolster the prestige and power of their
[according to RC doctrine] lord the pope.

Torquamada and Mother Teresa are THE SAME in that their
[according to RC doctrine] supreme guidance came/comes
from the papacy/magisterium.

Who one heeds will determine where one spends eternity.

JP> To man-pleasing, liberal, borderline apostate
JP> protestants, the difference is ignored.
AS> Golly. WhoEVER could you mean?

Most modern "christians" of organized religion.

AS> But you ignored the important point: to CHRIST,
AS> the difference is eternal. And HE will judge, not us.
AS> WE are specifically told NOT to judge until the time.

Fine.

AS> Yes, quite frankly, I think He will say to Torquemada,
AS> "depart ye accursed, I knew ye not."

Careful now, we wouldn't want to be too JUDGEmental !

AS> I think He might say it to a lot of people that might suprise us.
AS> And there is a possibility He may say it to me.
AS> And, whether you believe it or not, with your hatred for others, .....

Your JUDGEMENT of me is noted.

What is one who does what he claims others should not do ? 1/2

AS> .....there is a possibility of that happening with YOU, too.

Your above is just a long-winded way of revealing
you don't have a clue as to how Jesus sees things.

Listen up- this is simple-

I'm betting on the proposition that Jesus wants people to KNOW
that Jesus was not guiding those who created and conducted
the Inquisition, and that the Revelation of Jesus reveals the way
Jesus sees the religious institution that DID create and conduct
the Inqusitions.

The label "Christian" INSINATES someone or something led by CHRIST.

I betting that CHRIST resents it being even INSINUATED
that mass murderers rate being labeled "CHRISTians."

People who say Roman Catholics are Christians are telling
the world that pope-led mass killers were "Christians".

[IOW- "Christian" no matter what they did,
and no matter who they heeded]

Actually, people who say "Trinitarians" are Christians,
are telling the world that carnal killers are Christians,
because-
Every chaplain and most soldiers of every army in every war
[on all sides] involving "Christedom" for the last nearly 1700
years has been a "Trinitarian" "Christian."

MAN PLEASING "christian" PUKES ignore these facts.

[while they cheerfully denigrate "fundies"]

AS> burned. Vlad Tepes--you know him perhaps better as Dracula, a very
AS> real historical person, prince of Transylvania, who put thousands to
AS> death by impaling them on stakes. He fought against Muslim "infidels",
AS> even nailing the turbans of Turks to their heads. He was a sadistic
AS> bloodthirsty monster. He too was an avowed Christian.
JP> Which cult ? Roman Catholic ? Or "Orthodox" ?
AS> To the victims, it matters very little, John.

Regarding your claim he was an "avowed Christian" it is relevant.

AS> Am I going to
AS> say that God looks more with favor on them because they professed
AS> Christianity than Dr. Leipzig, who helped some total strangers rebuild
AS> a church? "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not
AS> prophesized in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? And in
AS> thy name done many wonders? And then will I profess untothem, I never
AS> knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity." [Matt 7:22.]
JP> What might He think of people who causually slander Christ
AS> Telling the faults of some of His followers is not slandering Christ,
John.

Unless it is a "fundy" type doing the fault finding, I presume.
When a "fundy" type does it, then it is "hateful."

The issue I raise has to the correctness of claiming or insinuating
that mass murderers should be called "His followers."

["CHRISTians" are presumed to be "His followers"]

AS> He obviously had great respect for Moses, but little for the
AS> Pharisees and Sadduccees He criticized, though they thought
AS> themselves to be followers of Moses and descendents of Abraham.

"For IF you believed Moses,
you would believe Me; for he wrote of Me." John 5:46

AS> I would hate to justify HATE in Christ's name, though.
JP> ........ by insinuating mass murderers are guided by Christ ?
AS> By no means.
JP> [which is what one does when one speaks of mass murdering
JP> "Christians"]
AS> By no means, John. Your definition of Christian, if it means one who
AS> is guided in Christ in all things, is very different than mine.

Do you agree with the principle that "Christ-led"

is DIFFERENT FROM "Clergy-led" ?

AS> "Judge NOTHING before the time" Jim.
JP> Rev. 2:2 'I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that
JP> you cannot endure evil men, and you put to the test those who call
JP> themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false;
AS> Sure. I even know someone who claims to be an apostle. To have seen
AS> Jesus. And I similarly judge him false, on the evidence. But since one
AS> who is an apostle is one who has seen the risen Christ, it hardly
AS> seems germane here...

It's germane to the appropriateness of JUDGING
[evaluating, if you will] ANYONE who claims spiritual authority.

[the alternative is becoming among the "blind following the blind"]

As> [A- Quoting John Prewett to Asmodeus - #5 Yes, that does figure if
As> you think about it. Where is the proof of a 'heaven'? I see none.

As> Ok, I WANT to see this evidence. I am extremely open to new ideas and
As> wish to see. If it is extraordinary evidence, with no room for error,
As> I'll become a firm believer as it will simply be a matter of fact, and

As> hold it in awe, but you can give it your best shot.

Predictive power is a "scientifically" recognized type of "evidence."
The Biblical equivalent is prophecy and fulfillment.

The following, with one stroke, elegantly
BOTH-
constitutes evidence of the truth of Jesus Christ,
AND
reveals what God and Jesus think of what
you call the "white lighter religions."

The following is a correlation of some of the Revelations descriptions,
and the unique fulfillment found in known facts re- the Vatican.

From chapters 17 & 18- ['IFO" = "In Fulfillment Of']

17:2 '.....with whom the kings of the earth committed immorality..'. IFO
17:2 - The immoral ties of the Vatican with earthly rulers
are presently and historically verifiable.

17:4 '.....and the woman was clothed in purple and scarlet...'. IFO 17:4
- Find a picture of the Cardinals in full costume.

17:5 '.....Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots....'. IFO 17:5 - The
Vatican calls herself the 'mother church'
because the denominations came out of her.
The denominations share her perversion.

17:6 '.....drunk with the blood of saints...'.
IFO 17:6 - Study the inquisitions. A policy of murder & torture
of real people, carried out openly over centuries.
Inspired and directed by men who claim to be the
unique and direct representatives of Jesus Christ.

17:9 '.....seven hills on which the woman sits....'. IFO 17:9 - Rome is
famous for its seven hills.

17:15 '.....The waters which you saw where the woman sits,
are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues....'. IFO 17:15 - The
worldwide influence of the Vatican is obvious.

17:18 '.....and the woman you saw is the great city which
reigns over the kings of the earth...'. IFO 17:18 - The popes long ruled
openly over the kings of the known world.
Every king knew that if he bucked the papacy, then the pope
would - could - did encourage the citizens to revolt.
This principle is still in practice today.

18:4 '.....voice from heaven saying: Come out of her MY people...'. IFO
18:4 - Some R.C.'s belong to Jesus and will come out.
[they will also come out of the denominations]
This is happening now, and has happened before.

18:12-19 ..... describes the great wealth of the great whore. IFO 18:12-19-
Vatican's financial assets [open & hidden] are enormous.

The Revelation says there is a great whore in the city of 7 hills.
Lo and behold- there is. Most commentators place the writing
of the Revelation at around 90AD, well before the Vatican existed.

This visible and verifiable fulfillment is God-given
evidence confirming the truth of Jesus Christ.

Discussion most welcome. With best wishes, John

[depending on your reaction to the above,
we may or may not next venture into prophecy
that I expect to see fulfilled in the near future]

WBW, John

Ah... reminds me of a tasteless cartoon (the best kind)
I saw recently.

Two "flashers" are hiding in an alley. One is dressed as
Jesus Christ. Around the corner an unsuspecting nun is
walking down the street.

The flasher dressed as Christ is speaking: "Want to see
someone shit a brick? Watch this..."

That's what concerns me. The man hasn't even been dead for twenty
years and already there is a massive body of both pro- and con-
Hubbard myths.

For instance, none of the supposed witnesses or parties to the
Hubbard-Hienlien bet never made any statements indicating that
such a bet had been made. Nor are there any first hand witnesses
to the alleged "The way to make money is to start your own
religion." quote, even though it was supposedly made before a
large audience. Yet both anecdotes are taken by most at face value.

Whether he ends up on the good or the bad side of the pantheon

his way to becomeing legend.

Really... I've been seeing those robo-posts for something like

I've especially enjoyed the rants about Janet Reno. Those folks seem
to forget that Reno was Clinton's THIRD choice Attorney General (the
first being rejected for employing an illegal alien as a housekeeper
and the second not wanting the job).

So in one short month she went from being a relatively unknown city
official from Jessejonesograd to being one of the masterminds of the
New World Order planetary conspiracy. It must involve one hell of a
training course.

JH>> Cultures blend. Always have, always will, the prohibitions
JH>> of "holy laws" notwithstanding.

AS> The Jews, for thousands of years, and a variety of
AS> circumstances, have stayed true to their concept of God, despite
AS> pogroms and Holocausts and Inquisitions. The one thing they would
AS> be LEAST likely to assimilate is in the matter of religion.

But we know of at least one very obvious example of a fusion
between the tribal ethno-centric religion of the Jews and the
more cosmopolitan world outlook of the Greeks and Romans.

It's called Christianity.

And in modern times we have the observance of Hanukkah. The
history of it's observance as a major holiday happens to coincide
with the time when Dickens and the retailers made Christmas
into a Mighty Big Deal. Also, you will find it being either a
minor observance or not observed at all in those parts of
the world where the Eastern Orthodox callendar is used and
Christmas is celebrated somewhat later in the year.

JH>> Cultures blend. Always have, always will, the prohibitions
JH>> of "holy laws" notwithstanding.

AS> But...although it is a good generalization, JJ, sometimes
AS> it falls flat on specific instances. For instance, American
AS> settlers adapted very little from Indian religion.

Only because there was little or no cultural interaction between
the two. Assimilation is a gradual process that takes generations.
The campaign of genocide waged against the natives didn't allow
enough time.

In areas where there was enough time (the Southwest) we do see signs
of such melding. However, the examples are largely limited to
Antichrist Roamin' Catholicism, which we all know isn't God's
favorite brand of Christianity.

However, I will grant you that assimilation does require a certain
degree of cultural flexibility, an ability to adapt to new
situations. The tribal cultures of the Indians of the southwest are
rigidly traditionalistic, and as such are doomed to inevitable
extinction. Judaism, thanks in part to the Babylonian captivity,
is a little more adaptive. Yet you will notice that while it does
survive, only very rarely (and under special circumstances) has it
ever really thrived.

JH>> There were other hymns that were frequently requested for

AS> Heh! That's funny. We just give 'em a hot meal and put 'em
AS> up for the night, let them have showers and watch TV.

My very first exposure to The 700 Club was in a small mission in the
apple growing region of Virginia (might have been Winchester, but
all my memories of those years tend to blur together). The ONLY
program allowed on the TV was 'The 700 Club'. I recall watching
about 15 minutes of it with an overpowering sense of "What is this
shit?".

Luckily (?) that was the night when they packed everyone into a van
and drove them over to be displayed at a "meeting" in a local school
auditorium. The mission stiffs got up and "testified", everyone
stood up and sat down several times and sang songs.

After that ordeal, we were packed back into the van and had the
option of watching more of The 700 Club. I went to bed early.

I agree. IF it is still around in 1997.

Don't forget that the last "moderator-in-name-only" (Konehaid)
damned near got the thing removed from the backbone.

Right now it's faultering. It seems that a lot (but sadly not all)

PS> I heard that he was aboard a destroyer during WWII.

That concurs with the biographical notes about him in the
back of Dianetics. For some reason I thought Hubbub was older
than that. I thought Crowley had made a few references to him
(Maybe Luke Clark has these handy), which would tend to make
him older than the average WWII soldier's age of 25.

JESUS SAID "EAT ME!"

MARK 14:22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed,

To confuse things even more, the *alternate* plural of opus is also:

Opuses

:)

They're wonderful. I love losing a day in a Fiesta (the one on
Hwy. 6 and Bissonnet is a hoot...great place for badly acted,
badly shot, badly dubbed Indian movies...). I, also being a
gourmand, just enjoy the hell out of finding something
comestiblely new at these stores. The aforementioned store is
in the newly populated Asian west section of town...what a
melange of weirdities can be found in that place.

Over in my neck of the woods (San Antonio East...ack...Katy),
there's a new "African Hair Goods and Food Store". If you need
ghoeuzhaco or "rift flattener", this is the place to go.

... Just exactly how much 'Whiz' is in Cheese Whiz?
