so...even in reincarnation, there is eventually a nirvava(/heaven) type
deal.
Or are you trying to say we are reborn forever? That would seem kinda dumb

and pointless if you ask me..

well, there seems to be alot published about him, so perhaps there is
something there...have you tried his ceremonial-type(?) magic? I've never

tried any, which is why I'm talking to you :) I need help, guidance,
whatever. If you know anyone that actively performs magic, I would be
interested in participating in it, just to get the feel of it, learn a few

things...

BH> Heee...hee...hee...stop sobbing now, I'm sure we can find someone to

kinda like popeye and his spinach? Except I could eat a peanut butter

I thought everyone could do magic. Or perhaps that is true, but he who
has
more talent, can work magic more sucessfully...am I near the mark?

and then what? what happens when you have accomplished that?

so...other magicians can sense others' magical activity and do something
about
it? (pretty sick minded people if your story is to be believed ;)

most that I have talked to at WCC dont like to use magic. in fact, if you

want to become an official member type of thing, they make you take an oath

(if i remember correctly) only to use it in extreme cases. so not much
I can
learn there...ttyl.

Heilsa, Sue!

While bumping down stairs after Christopher Robin, Gwenny the Pooh heard
Sue say to Judith:

JB>> The protection of children is important. Therefore we should not

JB>> "A man whose testicles have been crushed or whose male member has

SA> Huh. According to this, it doesn't matter WHAT I do. I could pray

Hey, me, too. Oh, well.

Heilsa, Zach!

While bumping down stairs after Christopher Robin, Gwenny the Pooh heard
Zach say to Gwenny:

ZD> I chose Valhalla, I like the nordic religions, and another thing...
how do
ZD> you get in touch with wiccans, I'd like to learn more (peticularily
ZD> about pre-christian Irish religions) thanx

I assume you mean locally. I see that you are in British Columbia. There
are quite a few pagans up your way (we had an entire section that called
themselves the "Canadian Embassy" at Dragonfest. They also have a festival
up there in late August or early September. I'm hoping to go this year.

Also, so if any of your local bbs carry PODS (Pagan Occult Distribution
System). You usually have to be eighteen or have a parents permission to
be allowed to read these echoes. If you are old enough and can get these
echoes, look for Lucetius or Hillwalker. Tell 'em, Gwenny sent you.

Heilsa, Dan!

While bumping down stairs after Christopher Robin, Gwenny the Pooh heard
Dan say to Steve:

SW>> The only power satan has is what we give him.

DC> So, not only are we more powerful than your piddly god, we are

Ya know, it makes me crazy...well, I was already crazy, but that's not the
point , that the only ones who believe in satan are the xtians. And
they scream about how powerful he is. If he does exist, it's only because
of their constantly empowering him.

An uncaused cause? How can something have a cause but be uncaused?
Its like non-alcoholic beer, fat-free spam, or hot-buttered ice...it
boggles the (mine at least) imagination. I don't have a problem with
conceptualizing the singularity of a black hole being both infinite and
terribly small (though you should forgive my spotty technical terms),
that time and space can be one, that Asmodeus is a legend in his own
mind, or that there were two Darins on Bewitched. But this just makes
me guffaw all around the room. Please explain.

VT> If all you people are atheist then you made you?

Only if I was a self-made man, which would take the burden off nature.
I guess you meant "WHO made me..."

Mom and Dad supposedly, though I do understand that I look a lot like
the milkman...

VT> Where do you go when you die?

I don't know. I keep trying to remember to buy a map so I'll be
prepared when the day comes, but...

VT> Who do you pray too?

McMahan and Clark over at Publisher's Clearing House. I also invoke
the minor deities of the state lottery system from time to time.

VT> What do you fear?

Hot water bottles. And don't ask me why.

Some people I talk to on one of the writing echoes either
have a flair for the overly dramatic (which perhaps makes

heinous shit when their Black Dog comes barking--I don't have
it as bad as some of them; oftimes they feel certain they'll

that doesn't sound contradictory.

RJ> Or even Zen! |8-o

GtP> Damn, I wanted to work in something like "That was Zen but this is
GtP> Tao" but I can't get my brain to work...do you think saying "Have a
GtP> nice day" several hundred times in eight hours can destroy your mind?

No, but if you say it to enough people in a day, it might be
detrimental physically--as some people find the phrase extremely
annoying.

RJ> Just said to make a point. I only reserved the torture for
RJ> animals that stood a good chance of fighting back.

GtP> Are you looking for volunteer.

Yeah sure, anytime. I used to love wrestling with
my dogs when I was young--midsize models, dontcha know, 40 to
50 pounds of pure-muscled mutt--because they'd put up a good
fight. I'd get all muddy, scratched and chewed on, run around
the yard and the woods. Not really many people my age in the
neighborhood.

GtP> (with fewer side effects) to go into a private place and chant for
a
GtP> half an hour. Besides, I get to wear nifty robes or have an excuse
to
GtP> be naked. Works for me. Besides, we have alot of fun when
we

I've got this big, billowy robe on right now--I seem to wear it
all the time right now, but that has a lot to do with it being
about 55-60 degrees in my room this season. It's thin enough
that it's not smothering, and I can wear my shorts and a T or
less (I hate having to wear winter clothes).

GtP> do stuff together, since I have YET to see more than one ritual that
GtP> was serious for the entire time.

I get together with a group of people in my are at least twice
a month to have night-long drumcircle/keggers--what I really
enjoy about them is that they are purely secular affairs; we're
all a bunch of skinbashing afficionados who like to make a big
noise. I went to two that were under auspices of pagan
ritual (autumn equinox and something like a full moon dealie).
I felt just a *bit* uptight, since some of the people there
just seemed to be a bit too into the "spiritual" thing, and what
I get out of it is a chance to make up some really interesting,
complicated, and speech-inflected patterns. Our regular drum-
circles are really just a gathering of musicians, although some
of them are pagans.

RJ> Actually, I've found it a bit beneficial that I start cross-examining
RJ> the pagans and liberal Christians--it makes me ask penetrating

GtP> Yes, a good discussion with someone who has strong beliefs, but an
GtP> open mind, can be very illuminating and entertaining. I have several
GtP> Christian friends who I enjoy very much.

Last night, I was pondering on a lengthy essay-type post I
was going to address to ALL, based somewhat on that. As a
number of trenchant firebreathers have outright admitted,
they usually don't cross-X the pagans because they keep their
beliefs hush-hush, but I've been thinking about some inherent
pitfalls in that route. I won't go into it at the moment
(my mind's really not up to formulating the whole thesis at
the moment), but it has very much to do with the "revolution
of rising expectations" tack--seeing as how nontraditional,
i.e., non-whitebread jeezoid, religions and beliefs are being
allowed more acceptance in mainstream society--and yet especially
because they consider themselves very much victims of persecution
(quite true, I have no quibble with that), it seems that in the
near future, a "vocal minority" of pagans will start muddying
up what is already a turbulent social fabric. As you know, the
majority of Christians are not the typical asshole fundies we
see in rare form here--they're either like Al or Lynda, or they're
nominal Christians. Yet, it's that vocal pain in the ass that
causes many of their correligionists to fall in line or let them
have all their fun. I seriously doubt that pagans, even though
they tend to favor non-conversion, won't avoid that quagmire, and
the main reason is because of belief. Don't get me wrong, I
also see atheists and agnostics (often in the same boat as pagans)
susceptible to political mobilization as well. I just see their
tack as being a bit easier to fight along certain lines--you'll
probably see some pro-eugenicist movements, which, like others
who might try using a faux science-based ideology, but if they
would use logic to advance dubious methods, logic can be used
to argue against them. It's the problem of political aims based
on nothing more than *belief* which I fear more.

And so, that's why I've started examining the pagan belief
structures with a hard eye--I want to see what I'm pretty sure
is a "historical inevitability", to glibly use a Marxist term.
You know I don't forsee any of you becoming "the enemy", but I'm
afraid I see some of the kernels in the religion qua religion...

RJ> It's probably a good idea, IMO, for personal relationships--to
RJ> heighten understanding so that one doesn't stay totally in the

GtP> Very thoughtful of you. We women, like you men, do have our quirks
GtP> that totally confuse the other sex.

One thing that's always bothered me is the difference girltalk
has from guytalk in "conquest" stories. Women always whine
about how guys are such pigs for kissing and telling--but it's
usually in a positive manner. I rarely hear guys sit around and
talk about all the lousy lays they've had--and it seems that's
more often the focus of the female side, just from my observation.
Can't say *I've* been a topic, since you'd have to look PRETTY
hard to find anyone with firsthand experience.

GtP> is mixed, I would have overcome the "race" thing. Not so. I tend
to
GtP> be anxious around Oriental men...for no reason that I can find. And
I
GtP> LOATHE Jewish women from New York (and not all Jewish women, since
one
GtP> of my dearest friends is a JAP-turned-pagan from Boston)....all I have
GtP> to do is hear one of them whining in that nasally voice....sorry,

What, you don't find Fran Drescher's voice a turn-on.

GtP> where was I. But you see how it is. I guess I'm not perfect
GtP> yet. (BTW, I DO know where that prejudice comes from...having to deal
GtP> with the "rich" girls in college, most of whom where either East Coast
GtP> Jews or Southern "belles"....)

I have a few prejudices, but there's not much point in going
into it right now. Mainly, I like to drop ethnic slurs for
laffs about groups no one tends to think of--calling Scots
a bunch of thistle-arsed, knock-kneed bogtrotters, for one.
I'm always up for a good tweak of the Limey nose--and I happen
to be half-English, biologically. I haven't come up with any
good ones for Hungarians (my other half) yet.

RJ> I've read up on chaos theory, and it's affected my
RJ> philosophical standpoint. Religious systems seem like one of those
RJ> linear constraints that are detrimental by virtue of imposition on a
RJ> nonlinear environment (individual minds)--and the more linear
RJ> and narrow, the worse they are. Roman Catholicism and
RJ> fundamentalism, for two specifics.

GtP> Don't forget Islam.

Zackly.

I could imagine--especially since there's so many moving parts

RJ> nightly stories of the Khmer Rouge and mounting deathtolls
RJ> in Cambodia.

AS> Yeah, I guess you've seen your share of horrors too.

Lucky me, I couldn't do what all four-year-olds normally did.
I had to be too fucking precocious for my own good. I watched
Nixon's resignation on TV, live. Can't say I knew what was
going on, or how big a deal it was, other than our Head Honcho
was out of the game. And yet I somehow started showing signs
of Republicanism in my single-digit years.

RJ> detente talks, and unless accords were reached _"war is
RJ> inevitable"_(I doubt I'll *ever* forget those words).

AS> In the LATE seventies? I'm trying to think of a time when relations
AS> got that bad...(Not doubting you, just trying to think what it could
AS> have been.)

It was just before the SALT talks. And another fun incident
from '78--the time we were three minutes from nuclear anihilation
because some joker at NORAD put the wrong program in the war
computer one time, instead of the "this is a drill" tape, it
was the "this is NOT a drill" one--and I understand they even
went as far as broadcasting the EBS signal without "This is only
a test" in the shpiel. I don't remember that, but heard about
it in civics class some years later.

RJ> Yeah, by 1991, I often had a sense of relief in discussions
RJ> of world politics, because it was nice for once in my life
RJ> to not be obsessed with the fear of a great screaming in the
RJ> sky.

AS> It's nice to live in a time that is not quite so paranoid.

I wouldn't say that--there's probably *more* paranoia now.
Even with all the rhetoric, most people stayed on kilter in
the Cold War days because they knew the Reds were just as
hooked on power and money as the US--and they wouldn't want
to blow a great moneymaking venture like a Cold War and massive
military buildup they had no real intention of using. I got
to sleep many a night trying that rationale.

As one pundit put it, re: the end of the war, that "now the dragon
in the forest has been defeated, all the snakes come slithering
out of the trees." Now we've got GENUINE loonies, many who think
their god will give them an E-ticket to Paradise for destroying
The Great Satan; we've got petty thugs looking to set up countries
on clods of dirt in the name of genocide, and we've got a huge
former superpower trying in a few corners to act like it knows
what century this is, but plenty of folks think it's time for
the Tatars to come riding in on horseback to Mongolian Clusterfuck
every enemy they can dig up from their history since the Scythians.

It's nowhere NEAR over yet.

KW> BTW, most blood collection services will allow family members and

Another thing catching on is setting up a personal bloodbank.
No need to crossmatch--unless you suddenly change bloodtype
in your life. I hear it's actually healthy to bleed off
a pint every now and then--you get a whole new batch of fresh
RBCs, and there's supposed to be something about the iron
levels in the blood which is improved from it. Who'da thunk
it, that those medieval barbers might've occasionally done
some good for some people "aye, m'lud, sit ye down in me chair
an' we'll give ye a good bleedin'!"

But still--I don't want none o' that big steel pigsticker

I figured there necessarily have to be some atheist-turned-
pagans out there, just like there are plenty of atheist-turned
fundy (Prewett, are ya list'nin?) sorts. I can see it as a
slightly more "sensible" switch than the latter, but I'm even
more intrigued by that route than that of believers who remain
believers. Many atheists and agnostics consider themselves
"spiritual" people, and of course lack of belief in God is only
one thing to lack belief in, it doesn't rule out people believing
in a "soul".

KW> right and appropriate for me. If you really have a burning need to
KW> know more, ask me in net or e-mail, and I'll tell you.

I may just have to do that. I won't right now, but when I start
leading up to something on the echo, I'll either come back to
you on it, or you might feel inclined to send your story via net.

KW> And yes, we don't always take our religion, or ourselves seriously.

This, I've learned from the start. I've met very few dour
pagans--which is one main reason I like to hang out with them.
If there's anything I can't stand, it's someone without a
sense of humor. That's actually one of the first things I
becan disliking intensely about fundies when I was really young.

RJ> REBIRTH??? B-but...that sounds like "born again"!

KW> Reincarnation, not mind wiping, okay? It is because they shed their
KW> skins and look all new and young again.

Yeah, that's one belief I _fully_ intend to put in the hotseat
when I'm sure I've got my brainbox running up to speed. Rein-
carnation, particularly "past lives", is prevalent in so many
religions and belief systems, just like the savior mythos and
tales of an "afterlife". And thus, several religions with
reincarnation beliefs are also responsible for untold human
suffering and misery. Ever heard about what life is like for a
typical Buddhist woman from Cambodia or anywhere else in the
SE Asian peninsula? Not pleasant at all. Picture a nation
full of Maria Russells, only without that gusto for assertion
and self-esteem.

... Did he just say..."splunge"?

Having studied Irish history a bit, I can answer both why the
Irish love blowing each other and the Brits up, as well as why
so many Irish rock bands think they have inject themselves
into every social issue they find fashionable. The nutshell
answer is that the Irish are simply *obsessed* with their history.
The actual answer is much like Irish history itself: incredibly
byzantine in complexity, with as many sides fighting together
and against the same thing, but all agreeing on one thing--the
English are behind it somehow.

RJ> Ya gotta think...anyone that'll fuck over a friend for a crack
RJ> at their wife isn't thinking rationally in the first place,

DW> That's true. But I wasn't only speaking of fucking over friends.

I think it should just spill over naturally into that. In
the grand scheme of things, any guy with a SO should be viewed
as "friend"--unless you hate the guy, but then why would you
want to date a woman with such bad taste in men? Again, as I
explain my rationale, it becomes clear to all why I date even
less than DRice on average.

DW> It seems that an ethical code that a person has put some thought into
DW> (dare I say, reason & empathy?) is much stronger than a moral code
DW> handed down from on high.

It's what *I've* been trying to say for quite awhile. Inter-
estingly enough, this very topic (ethics and empathy for atheists
vs. believers) is being debated on MENSA--and strangely enough
there are three agnostics who think religion is a good thing
which should be encouraged because it fosters trust and honor.
I started out on the debate thinking it was some sort of joke
(they do an occasional amount of Holysmoking there), but two of
'em are serious--and the other claims he's playing devil's
advocate part of the time. Weird.

Seeing as how most of a fundy's life is devoted to a conscious
regimen of fear, what with fanning a broomstick under their
bed each night looking for demons and science books, most have
been trained to think anyone who professes worship of Satan
is able to make their blood-pentacle-inscribed goathead on
the wall shoot fire from the eyes and horns and make their little
fundy children come after their parents with a butcher knife
and a diabolical laugh. They think these teenage-badass-wannabes

So I guess their power from Jayzus isn't as strong as they think.

Then again, even if the Muslims made it through Europe, there
would've been quite a lot of influence on Islam coming from
north of the Rhine--those shaggy blond people managed to do a
heavy number on that Judeo-Platonic mess that sprung up some
800 years before. You can just forget about all those dietary
laws pertaining to pork, for one--a few centuries of Kraut ass-
kicking on the Arabs would've loosened them up on a few things,
just like much of Western Christendom and the continued fasci-
nation with decorating trees in December and hiding eggs in the
spring.

Yeah, first I'd say, "OK, you're a better man than I am, Gunga
Din--so...where ya hidin' the hologram projector?" and then,
faiing that, I suppose I _would_ have to start thinking about
the as-yet-unevidenced possibilities, but only after I've
checked myself into a loonybin for observation.

PS> I'm composing a list now, leaning heavily towards the obscure words.

RJ> I'm sure you'll be floccinaucinihilipilificating him in no time.

PS> Doubtlessly. (Yes, I do know what the word means. No, I don't take it
PS> as an insult. )

Of course not, since you'd know you'd be the one doing the
insulting if you were floccinaucinihilipilificating. But
perhaps, that's one word that'll make him trek up to look
through the OED--being one of the only dictionaries that
defines the word.

Yeah, if you can't fight fair, fight dirty.
