MH> LB> Just out of curiousity, but is there any concept of a NONheinous
MH> LB> blasphemer? Because if not, isn't that redundant?
MH>
MH> I used the phrase because Rob had. I was just adopting his patois.
MH> It's not something I'd've come up with myself.
RB> And I got 'heinous blasphemer' from Staal and he got it from
RB> Preacher Bob and he got it from Reverend Failwell and he got
RB> it from the LORD ALMIGHTY!!!
Yeah, I realized its pedigree went back even farther after I'd already
credited you for it. Sorry. :)
RB> "Honest officer, I'm just borrowing this patois."
"Son, I know you can't afford no fine patois like this one."

JB> Mike, you once asked me about reconciliation of my stand on abortion
JB> in light of my affiliation with Quakerism. I have found the 'minute'
JB> adopted by most meetings on that, including my own. Here it is.
I appreciate your forwarding this. While I don't agree with its
conclusion, it is an eloquent and gracious defense of the position.
==QUOTES BELOW FROM THE MINUTE==
JB> Members of the Committee with a Concern for Reproductive Issues
JB> are united in caring about the clearness of each woman considering
JB> this decision. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, we urge
JB> Friends to hold each other in the Light without being judgmental.
And so do I. While I do oppose abortion, I do not seek to judge women
who have them. (Which I'm sure many here will not believe, but it's
true.)
JB> We pledge our support for a society which raises its children to
JB> cherish themselves and those around them. We pledge our support for
a
JB> society in which women and children are valued as much as men. We
JB> pledge our support for a society in which at least as much time and
JB> money is spent over the quality of life as is now devoted to the means
JB> of destruction and war.
I agree wholeheartedly with this, too. But I wonder whether children
can truly cherish themselves and those around them in a society which
defines a certain class of people -- the unborn -- as not inherently
valuable.
... A thousand compromises do not equal a victory.

MH> Jesus promises that all who earnestly seek the truth will find it.
HP> Yet there are many who earnestly seek the truth and don't find it, and
HP> even more who earnestly seek the truth and don't find it in _Jess_.
HP> Is the bible wrong, are they not "really" trying, or was whoever wrote
HP> what Jess supposedly said -- shudder -- _wrong_?
How do you know they don't find it? Neither you nor I knows what
happens to them after they die. Perhaps God -- being a fair and
merciful God -- makes everything clear to them on the other side and
allows them to choose then. OR, perhaps God -- being a fair and
merciful God -- judges those who have never heard of Jesus based on how
they behave and believe in light of what they *do* know.
MH> When the Bible says that those who don't believe in Jesus are
MH> damned, it's speaking to people who have heard of Jesus.
HP> How do you know that?
Because people who haven't heard of Jesus haven't read the Bible. QED.
All of those condemnations are in the context of people who have a fair
and free opportunity to make a choice, and choose to reject Jesus.
HP> Why are they "damned?"
Because God is the only source of salvation, and we gain it on his
terms. Terms, which by the way, are incredibly generous and gracious.
Simply say a sincere yes to it, and it's yours.
HP> Why should people in "hell" treat each other any worse than they did
HP> in life?
Do you think people in this life treat each other very well? Hell will
probably be no worse than life here -- but for most people here,
that's none too good.
HP> Why should people in "heaven" treat each other any better?
Because they made a free choice to allow God to take their sin from
them. In heaven, we have no sin, because while we were here, we chose
wisely.
HP> Doesn't this also sound silly?
No, it doesn't.
MH> and from regret that they didn't repent while they had the opportunity.
HP> What makes you think they'd care any more about "repenting" (whatever
HP> that is) after their death than before it? This hell you paint
HP> doesn't sound so bad, if you could stand "living" forever, of course
--
Have fun, then.
But, you ask, why would they want to repent then? Becuase they'll
realize they're driving perfectly serviceable Yugos, but those in
heaven have Mercedes, Maseratis and Saabs. (It's a metaphor, Markie.)

RS> This is clearly illustrated here in the Pacific Northwest. The timber
RS> battle has once again resurfaced after our wonderful congress in
RS> Washington D.C. tacked on a salvage timber rider to another bill. Of
RS> course the president signed it because the main bill was very important
RS> [this is where a line item veto would come in handy]. It basically
RS> allows timber companies to cut much more than before, wiping out the
RS> forests for centuries to come.
MH> You're comparing apples and pomegranates. I support environmental
MH> protection. You're absolutely right, maintaining the ecosystem is
MH> vitally important to our own survival.
RS> It's the same damn thing, and your religion is partly responsible for
RS> all this. In your religion, only human life is of value.
I strongly disagree. In my religion, everything natural is of value
because it is all part of God's creation. And I am not alone. Many
evangelical Christians are environmentally active. The Evangelical
Environmental Network has met with Bruce Babbitt and petitioned
Congress to leave the Endangered Species Act intact. It also is
sponsoring public service announcements in support of the Act. Notable
evangelical Christian leaders such as Dr. Anthony Campolo have written
books urging environmental activism on the part of Christians.
And that's just among evangelicals, who are the second most
conservative Christians, after Fundamentalists. The support for
environmental protection is even higher among more liberal Christians.
Your accusation bears little resemblance to reality.
MH> However, that's not the same as holding that every *individual*
MH> animal is of vital importance. What you do with your cat's fetuses
MH> isn't important to the overall health of the cat family. If your
MH> cat were one of the last seven on the planet, it would.
RS> The same could be said for humans, eh?
No, because -- as I already told you in a previous post -- human life
has an inherent value that other animals do not have.
RS> One last question. Why is human life any more valuable than animal
RS> life?
Because God created us, and only us, in His image. Don't ask me for
evidence of this; it is an article of faith. You either believe it or
you don't.
I do.

LB> There is a contradiction with reality, Jim -- it contradicts the
LB> truth. So much for inerrancy.
LB> Now, which is it? Is the Bible inerrant, and bats ARE birds? Or are
LB> bats mammals, and the Bible errs when it departs from theology?
How about: Bats aren't birds, and the Bible doesn't say they are.
According to Strong's Hebrew/Greek Concordance, the word translated
"bird" is "owph," which can mean to cover, or covered, or
"(things) that flieth, flying, fowl."
It is derived from the verb "'uwph," which is defined as follows:
'uwph; to cover (with wings or obscurity); hence to fly; also
(by impl. of dimness) to faint (from the darkness of
swooning):--brandish, be (wax) faint, flee away, fly.
Given the etymology of the word, isn't it likely that "owph"
should more properly be translated "things that fly" rather than
"birds?" In that case, it is not the Hebrew Bible which is in error,
but English translations.
... If I ran the world, things would be a lot better. Well, for me anyway.

Now that's something I find intellectually weak. In questions of God's
existence, the questions should be about God, now about how one
believer in God might act. If Jim can you push you toward atheism, how
come Al and Lynda don't push you toward theism?

Seems several promient members of a Jewish congregation became involved

One day, someone asked the rabbi if he was aware this was going on. "Of
course," he said. "I have nothing against it. Some of my best Jews are

I could have let this go with the clear indication that you are a

you said to Jim Staal:

this explanation. And yet you think it's perfectly fine for someone to
do it to a Christian.
You disgust me.

LB> After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King

DC> Did the wise men walk across the Mediterranean? Best I can say

What's more confusing is the statement that the wise men came FROM
the east (ie, started out farther east than Bethlehem) yet,
followed a star that was in the east (and so went east). If they
started out east of Bethlehem, the star would have had to have
been in the _west_ for them to follow it to the indicated town.

around with hookers, and all the priests and whatnot into little
boys (literally). Just because he's a Christian doesn't mean he
can't be a pervert. Hell, I'm _not_ a Christian, and I found his
area listings repulsive - I don't generally call boards with such
areas (I do call one, because the sysop carries a usenet echo I
requested, and I started calling _before_ he added "adult" areas.
But I requested that my access be _cut_ so that I can't see the
areas any more. I bet not many sysops get requests for access
LOWERING. I simply have no use for such areas, and I've no
interest whatsoever in seeing them or their contents. So I'm a
heathenish prude. Sue me.)
3 or moresomes? Married, will cheat? Sex in public places?
Yeeesh. Sounds like he hasn't had a .. partner .. in quite a
while. And I doubt he'll ever get one, either.

And Brave Sir Dan ran away, screaming "AN INTERESTING SITUATION."!
AG> The First AND Second World Wars were engineered by the international
AG> bankers. Here is a little historic background for your study:
AG> From:- `Pawns In The Game' by William Guy Carr (Chapter 16)
DC> I read your little historical fantasy. Quite frankly, I was not
DC> suprised to see "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" mentioned
DC> prominently, but the idea of Hitler keeping the EXCESSES of the "Nazi
DC> War Lords"--curiously unnamed, don't you think? Who WERE these

DC> REICH. You are a sick, dangerous man, Anthony. It is the mindset
DC> that Hitler literally espoused, the lunatic worldview that led him to

I'd like to add that I had an uncle who was interned a mere mile
from one of the Auschwitz camps - the main one, I think. He and
his fellow Canadian POWs _knew_ what was going on in that
Hell-on-Earth, and they could see half-starved Jews (and
presumably others) trudging to and from their slave-labour duties
every goddamned day before the liberation. Grigor-Scott is lucky
my uncle is no longer alive, else he'd fly to Sydney and beat the
little fuck to within an inch of his life (if he even spared him
THAT.) And I'd give him directions on how to get to West Ryde
from the airport, too.
There's nothing more disgusting on the face of the Earth than a
fucking Nazi.

Sounds like a sane way of handling the situation.
There have been some times that I've even personally had in my
possession something that would have made a child more comfortable, but
my hands were tied. I've had kids with coughing fits that needed cough
medicine that either needed to tough it out or try to call home, etc.
I agree that asprin isn't a good idea for a party not very aware of the
child's recent health to be giving. Since Tylenol is just as good, it
isn't hurting the kid to exclude it. I had a friend a few years younger
than I die of Reyes syndrome [her parents have since become major
activists about awareness of the condition] and that made a profound
impact on me.
With this flu epidemic, I've had lots of kids get sick on me, far more
than I've ever had. Yesterday I had a girl show up late for school
[official reason: ill] who came in, put her head down on her desk for 10
minutes, then started throwing up in the trash can. Friday I had a
kindergartener throw up at PE. The day before that I sent 2 3rd graders
to the office with general "I'm feeling yucky" complaints and they were
sent home. This is a MUCH higher percentage than I'm used to, where 90%
of the kids I send to the office come back in half an hour after having
rested, and maybe if it's early in the day a light snack. You better
believe I'm not asking kids to tough it out right now, like I usually
do.
... How can I be trusted with a baby but not a choice?

R> Did God create dinosaurs at the same time as man?
First there has to BE a gawd to do any sort of 'creating.' Do you have
any real evidence of one that exists? Me neither.
R> did God create dinosaurs before that, perhaps as his first try at a
R> living world..then realize that the dinosaurs were incapable of
R> worshiping him and destroy them...Then 65 million years later
R> create man.
Some stupid gawd that would be. Couldn't do the job right EITHER time!
Maaaaaybe...the answer is that a DAY in the life of some gawd is about 65
Million years to US! Hence, it was all in the same 'time frame.'
Hey... fundies believe just about anything they are told, right? :)

KM> I've never admitted to praying to any gawd.
Deny it RIGHT NOW in front of all these witnesses that you do not pray to
some gawd. As a fundy...you have no choice but to admit to doing it...or
PAY FOR IT.
KM> Nor have I ever tried to rewrite my own fairy-tale fictional
KM> rules or live by them.
Of course not. They are all properly inscribed and laid out for you in
your book of babble fairy-tales and instructions. You cannot rewrite one
iota of those hand-me-down commands. You have no such option left open
to you.
KM> Since I cannot find meaning of fundy in the dictionary, I have no
KM> idea what fundy trap is.
That one is easy: the same trap you fall into every time you reply. Thanks.

MH> Because the evidence is good that the written accounts of Jesus' life
MH> werein circulation not very long after the events they chronicled, and
MH> the disciples were a definite part of early church history. There
MH> really is no good reason to disbelieve them, unless you just take the
MH> illogical and indefensible position that everything in the Bible is
MH> considered false until proven true.
MH> A major clue is that the disciples are everywhere portrayed as
MH> fallible, ordinary human beings. Peter denies even knowing Jesus
MH> at one point, and doubts him a dozen times along the way. John and
MH> James bicker over who's superior. Thomas is skeptical. Myths tend to
MH> idealize the "good guys," but there's no sign of that here.
Homer's heroes were fallible, too, Mike. So were the heroes of the
Arthurian legends, so were the heroes of Charlemagne, and so forth.
Again, many stories were in circulation shortly after the events that
the legends were based on happened. That's how legends get started. To
me, all the events spoken of in the bible tell me is that something
probably did happen, many unrelated somethings, perhaps. Like the
Arthurian cycle, though, there is no real evidence one way or the other
concerning this carpenter's son and his clash with roman authority. We
have this version that survived. There are a few variants of the basic
story floating around, four of which are 'officially recorded' in the
Bible. It basically comes down to the one simple fact that you believe
in this particular 'myth' and I don't.

JH> Fine. How large a percentage did they represent?
Based on my experience, over 70% of the Wiccans that I have met were
over 30 years old. A good 15% or so were older than 45. One was a man
in his 60's.

MB>There's a ten-year-old girl who is eight months pregnant in
MB>Texas right now. Any so-called man who would do that to a
MB>little girl that age deserves to be hung up by his balls,
MB>which should then be cut off with a rusty pocket knife.
Well, it seems that she is probably 14, not 10. Not much better, maybe,
but less likely to be physically damaged by the pregnancy. As best as
can be known the '10 years old' came from a forged birth certificate
her mother used to get her into school and so forth (she isn't a legal
resident). Boyfriend is in custody, awaiting the birth of the
child, and will be charged once it is ascertained if he knocked her up
before or after her 14th birthday. On that merry front, in the past
week in this state of Texas one man was convicted of molesting his
teenage triplet daughters (he claims that Divine Inspiration directed
him to do it), and another man was sentenced to 50 years (25 years for
indecent conduct with a minor, 25 years for attempted murder) for
sodomizing his 3 month old son.

A CD player is worth the investment. CD's don't wear out the way tapes
do, so I buy them whenever possible, and make tapes for the car. I also
use the CD-ROM, with earphones, to listen to my music.

I certainly understand that! We are planning on a new computer soon,
too. Bear wanted to upgrade our 386, but I think that I have him
finally convinced that it would make considerable more sense to just go
ahead and buy a second system. I'm tired of the constant jockeying over
who's turn it is, and who needs it now.

Greetings!
I would like to point out some good news, I found about God.
There is only One God, Not three!
Jesus is God! He dwelt amoung us in the Flesh!
Please follow along with some of these verses.
Isa. 43:10
Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have
chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he:
before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
11 I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.
1 Timothy 3:16
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was
manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached
unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Colo. 2:8
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after
the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after
Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and
power:
Rev. 1:8
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which
is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Don't take my word for this, please read your own bible to find
out the truth!
Believe only in God's Word!
I am just writing what I found out to be true!
Brad Jackson
God Bless!
... And now, some words of wisdom:

First of all, that WAS an excerpt of a *.wri file that goes with Wave

Evidence, please, that what I'm using isn't registered?
Evidence, please, that I'm in violation of MY OWN ethical code?

You may use this demo copy for 30 days, after that it must be
registered. It doesn't say "if you want the extra features."

Gee.. if I tell a class I'm teaching they may have 10 more minutes to
work, play, or whatever, am I not assuming discontinuation of that

Yes, I do. I admit I make it freely. That irks you, doesn't it? That
there are those of us who know the scriptures and reject them BECAUSE of
what they contain? Not IN SPITE OF what they contain?
If there is a god, he gave me this mind. He must accept the decision I
make in full knowledge of the information available.
JS> Blasphemer!
Thank you!
What would YOU think of a parent who thought less of half of his
children than the other half?
Again, Jim, one or the other of these must be true:
1. That God considers my gender worthless except as sexual partners and
to rear children [and is thus not worthy of the worship of those he
considers worthless]. A perfect god would have a far better marketing
department. This makes him less than perfect, perhaps leading to #3 as a
conclusion if his words *say* he's perfect.
2. That the statements in the Bible which show women in such horrible
subordinate positions and demands that they stay there are less than
divinely inspired, leaving room to doubt the inspiration of MOST of the
Bible.
or
3. That there is no god and the whole thing is cooked up by men.
As a feminist, it is impossible for me to accept a male god and a male
savior.

That's one of a set of possiblities. He admits most of his epistles
[i.e. letters] are his own opinion. If someone were to publish my
personal letters in the Bible would that mean God said those things? I
don't think Paul believed he was writing divinely inspired works - he
was writing to persuade and set what he felt was appropriate policy.
KD> 2. That this is a god we females cannot worship for any reason

JS> Don't speak for all females. Bible believing females around the world

Funny, I don't belong to any of those groups and sought them out ONLY
after recognizing my feminist belief system meshed with theirs. But keep
pushing, and watch for news about my growing affiliation with one
particular online group.
I'm reading a fascinating book right now which demonstrates why women
CANNOT continue to worship a male god and male savior.
KD> This would mean that God hates half his creation.
JS> Evidence that God hates females, please?
If he divinely inspired Paul's writings, then he must have. Why are
women's heads offensive to God? Why must they not teach? If I exclude
someone from teaching or speaking, I must have something against them.
