In fact, most Christians who are being defeated in debate claim
that the opposition is controlled by "the lies of Satan" that
"Satan has put in their mind".
I'm always wondering why God doesn't put any truths in their mind
and make them win. Maybe it's because the God of the Christians
doesn't actually exist (neither does Satan, BTW) and hence it
comes down to sheer human and earthly debate skills.
On invalidation of the Bible, most Christians who've only ever
used the bible as a device to replace their brain (rather than
augment their life) crumble under the weight of having to think
for themselves.
You are at that point, Jim. Pray to Jesus all you like, but the
fact is that he doesn't provide to you what YOU CLAIM Satan
provides to me. Isn't Jesus benevolent enough?

I have got to wonder about such people. Don Martin believes
that the fundies believe what they claim to believe, and I
can't fault him for that. Yet, it still makes me wonder.
If these guys believe what they say they believe, then they
have GOT to be in denial somewhere else down the line. If I
believed that I was in rapport with an all-powerful entity
capable of toasting my buns forever, and that drinking,
etc., was against that entitie's wishes, why would I drink?
It was like that stupid idea of selling one's soul to the
devil: where did THAT come from? What person says "Oh,
yeah, I'll get unlimited power, etc., for about thirty
years, and then you get to twist me on a hot iron rack for
all of eternity in compensation for that . . . meanwhile
I'll just flip the bird at my sponsering entity by doing
this"? NOBODY I personally know is capable of making such
an incredibly stupid statement or bargain. Yet we are
supposed to believe that people DID do that, voluntarily.
The only thing that could make sense is that some of them
must suspect that it's all a fraud or something, and just
want to play it up while having a good time. Swaggart, for
example . . .
Yet it still confounds me.

Hey, I have no friggin' idea anymore. We HAVE been very
Xtian-friendly in the past, which may have been a mistake. I
should tell you the story sometime about how we learned the
Scientologists were bad news, back when we were
Scientologist-friendly. We are no longer that way now.
This has got to be the most twisted codependent relationship
that I've ever seen. Somewhere down the line, my friend is
totally fucked in the head. No doubt about it. And it
happened over the space of a year, I think. When I first
knew her, she was a sassy and assertive bitch redhead. She
was fun. Now she's a lump of pudding. I absolutely cannot
understand it. I know there's at least one chemical
imbalance that is running havok with her life. I remember
my own mother being beaten by my father, and I remember my
sisters eventually being beaten by their husbands. I've
heard my wife's stories about abuse in her earlier
relationships. I've read the posts of the women here who've
had bad relationships, and I've seen their explanation, and
while they make sense on an intellectual level, on a gut
level I'm still wondering what the hell is going on.
It scares me, quite a bit. I have to wonder if there are
aspects of that in my life, in my relationship. I don't
like to think there are, but I understand that there is more
than physical abuse . . .

Are we expected to believe that someone on a respected newspaper
wrote an _editorial_ containing that allegation or did a writer for
the paper quote someone who made that claim? There is a
considerable difference.
Any statement beginning "many scientists" is suspect. An actual
scientist _might_ say "many low-temperature physicists" or "many
inorganic chemists" but s/he, aware that it is dangerous to
generalize across fields, wouldn't care to be quoted making a flat
statement about scientists in general.
When you know who made the statement and in what context get back
to us. It might also be of use to mention when it appeared in _The
Washington Post_ (the page number would be nice too) so that others
might find it and marvel.

I was the same way up until some 10 years ago. I hated gays with a passion
-- and was growing ever more racist against blacks and Mexicans. The turning

honestly turned me into a gay-friendly literally over night.

I once slugged a guy with a stick when I was working at Builders Emporium

Oh... I might add that al of the scientifically-conducted studies ever
conducted which examines the relationship between belief in deity constructs
and intelligence show that the less intlligent one is, the more likely one
