When you start pushing for legislation to deny the civil rights of those
you 'disapprove' of, it is hate. I disapprove of people who allow their
dogs to run loose, but I'm not going to lobby for legislation that would,
in effect, strip them of their citizenship.
And that's what the legislation in Colorado, and proposed in Oregon, would
do. When any one group is singled out like that, and it is allowed to stand,
we are ALL in danger of losing rights that people have fought and died for.
Who knows...YOU could be next.

I should have known my youngest would turn out weird when, at the age of
4, he LOVED liver and onions (and still does). And at the age of 8 we took
him to a new fancy restaurant downtown (he's always had good manners). He
saw escargot on the menu and wanted some. We tried to discourage him...even
telling him it was snails...because they were fairly expensive. Then we
figured we'd let him find out for himself.
He loved them. So that became his special birthday food.

Ryan was correct up to that point. If you want to run in DOS7, bring up
your msdos.sys (it should be in your root directory, and yes it is now a
simple ascii file) in a text editor. You'll see a line that says BootGUI=1.
Change that to BootGUI=0. Do not change anything else in this file,especially
all the garbage at the bottom. Reboot. You will find yourself in DOS. If
you want to run Windows after that, either change it back to BootGUI=1 and
reboot, or just type "WIN". And you believed it when Gates said you didn't
need DOS anymore, huh? :)
Alternately, you could left click on the icon that represents the game icon
while in windows. Pull down to "Properties...", then click on the "Program"
Tab. At the bottom of that screen, you'll see a button marked "Advanced".
Click it. (Bear with me, we're almost finished.) On the screen that appears,
choose MS-DOS mode, and set up the config.sys and autoexec.bat files you
want to use to run the game (your regular config.sys and autoexec.bat files
will be preserved. The new ones will only be used when you run that particular
game.)
One important note: If you have the CD distribution of Win 95, DO NOT delete
your old DOS CD driver. If^H^H When Windows crashes, you will need that
driver to reinstall windows.
As a final note, if you have any problems, do not bother calling Microsoft
Tech Support. It will be a complete waste of your money.

Kinda tricky, either way. Admittedly, this could easily be seen as admitting
defeat, but then that land isn't especially valuable anyway; if I were in
either of the groups you're asking about, I'd flee the country. Assuming
that was possible, I suppose. I'm not sure how well received Palestinian
immigrants would be in, say, Turkey (which would probably be my first choice
if I were a Palestinian, assuming (as seems safe) that I were a moslem),
or Israeli immigrants would be in Europe or America.
If such cowardly options are not available, I'd say either faction you mention
above would be justified in, and ought to, pursue some fairly serious anti-terrorist
measures. Brutality and money are to some degree interchangeable; pursuing
lots of leads calmly can produce the same results as pursuing some leads
aggressively. Though their finances are not great, I'd say the sensitivity
of the present situation suggests both the Israelis and the peace-loving
Palestinians should dig deep in their pockets.

It isn't overpopulation you have to worry about. Look at everything man's
technology has touched. Disasters, oil spills, nuclear accidents, killer
bees, deforestation and strip mining, fresh water pollution with chemicals
that can kill like mercury and dioxin, pcbs, phosphates, acid rain.
This is just another disaster waiting to happen. And of course tampering
with the "natural" method of "evolution" is sure to fit right in there
with all the other things we screwed up.

I can actually order from a Spanish or Vietnamese menu. But I
point to the words for what I want, rather than murder them
with my Yankee pronunciation.
I can sometimes fake it with a Chinese menu if they have
anglicized spellings or little pictures of cows, pigs and
fish on the menu.
Not sure what I would do about Arabic. But I recently
discovered a little hole-in-the-wall (it's a converted
conveince store) Cuban place that doesn't mess with menus.
You'll eat what "Mama" wants you to eat. And they'll charge
you what they want to charge you. (I shit you not, the
price seems to depend on how well you are dressed and
wether they have paid the light bill yet this month or
not). The food is great though.

Nah... with Konehead out of the way the echo will be nothing

If Glenda had a lick of sense (HA!) she's open a bookstore and

That is probably my favorite pet-peeve with this echo. To me the
term 'fundamentalist' is a very specific classification. No less
specific than "bat" or "bird".
It's not that I object to the word because it's being used as an
epithet (I rarely hesitate to fling my favorite epithets when
in the mood), but I deeply dislike seeing nomenclature being used
incorrectly. Especially when it deals with a subject that interests
me, such as unusual religious beliefs.
Fundamentalism has very specific characteristics that distinguish it
and make it distinct and unique when compared to other theological
movements. It is _ALWAYS_ Protestant. Saying a Catholic or Moslem
is a Fundamentalist makes my head do a triple Linda Blair barstool
spin. They are always Biblical Inerrantists and Premillenial
Dispensationalists (say it three times fast). And lastly, they are
always Separtists, they view the world as two large camps: "Us" and
"Them". The outside world is always viewed as an adversary.
If a person's theology doesn't meet all of the above points, they
are NOT a Fundamentalist, they may still be a wildass crazy nutball,
but they are not a Fundamentalist.

Do me a favor: read the book now with your new outlook on things.

preacher who takes his religion just a little too seriously.
I'm no enemy of the Bible, it contains some really fine literature.
And Jonah is one of my favorites. Sure, it's a fable alright. But

And I am extremely thankful for this. What good does it do *anyone*
out there to know that I can pass as a standard-issue Caucasian even
though I'm one-quarter Japanese? Or that I have glasses and dress much
the way any other late twentieth-century college student might? The way
I look has so very little to do with my personality that the effect is
nearly negligible. At most, one might glean a bit of information regarding
my background and possible environmental influences on my personality from
my appearance--but since I usually strive for inconspicuousness, such
information is not easily forthcoming.

I agree with you completely. In my mind, the purposes of any religion with
a hierarchy should be as follows (in no particular order):
1. To provide emotional support for the needy, those who cannot for some
reason or another stand on their own either in day-to-day life or under
stressful circumstances.
2. To provide an expression for emotion that would not otherwise exist
in a given culture.
Unfortunately, religion is also used for a third purpose, that being to
control the masses. It is not always used this way, but it frequently is
and it's rather good at it.
Those are the benefits of an emotional brand of religion. Intellectual
religions, IMO, don't serve much of a purpose. Being intellectual, they
appeal best to thinking human beings, and thinking human beings are, as
far as my experience goes, not as likely as the average joe to get roped
into a religion. Therefore, IMO, intellectual religions are very nearly
oxymorons and self-defeating. Religion shouldn't be about thinking your
way into a state of religious bliss. It's about providing a release, even
for a little while, from what Shakespeare referred to as the slings and
arrows of outrageous fortune.

The way I heard it, it was a statute (not a law. Statutes are merely legal
suggestions, or so I'm told) posited by the governor. Basically, we can
ignore it because there's no way it would get passed into law (can you
say "unconstitutional"? I knew you could), but it is indeed a frightening
indication of our leaders' willingness to prostitute themselves to the
Religious Right.

If you've managed to deal with whatever problems you've been experiencing
without having to resort to medication, then kudos to you. But remember
that the drugfree route is not an easy one and you will doubtlessly wish
to be on the meds more than once, especially on rotten days. There is
some comfort to be found in the oblivion of sheer apathy, but it isn't
healthy and if you can find a better way to do it, then do it.
Just remember: medications these days aren't as harsh as they used to be.
If you feel that you can't handle it alone for whatever reason, see about
getting on some of the milder meds. It means slavery to a bottle, but
better that than death or insanity.

The only difference in the situations you describe lies in semantics.
Depending on the definition of "neighbor," then "...protecting yourself
from an aggressor" could most certainly be called "taking up a sword
and hacking away at your neighbor." Oh, I know you probably meant to
say that the second situation was an unprovoked attack, but you really
must be careful when dealing with language that is less than precise.

elevated to the status of martyr because he was probably the last president
in this country (until Reagan) whose people genuinely loved him. Ever since
then, with few exceptions, it's been a case of picking the lesser of two
evils. Kennedy didn't do much worthwhile in his term, and he certainly
didn't do anything that couldn't have been accomplished by another
president. What he did do was give an entire generation the image of a man
who was struck down in his prime, the classic hero who is slain before
he can accomplish his greatest good.
In the end, Kennedy was just a man. He was shot and killed, and that is
a shame. But it does not make him a hero.
