True. That is Righteous Judgment. Think of it from the point of view
of the bears. They could thank God for providing them a meal while

Besides, He is the one calling the shots. So, anything you or I

Ya. From the pov of most on this Conference this is probably true.
Problem is, someday it will be for many a historical horror novel.

BH>This is not the first time I have read an ad of this nature, and the
BH>more it happens, the ANGRIER I find myself!!!
BH> This is a real ad, taken from "The News Avertiser", January 7,
BH> 1996:

BH> CHRISTIAN HORIZONS
BH> Front line staff required to work with developmentally and
BH> behaviourally challanged individuals in group home settings.
BH> Working from a Christian perspective, education and experience
BH> are required.
BH> Apply in writing to:
BH> 575 Wentworth Street East,
BH> Unit 20, Oshawa Ont.
BH> etc. etc. etc.

Looks fine to me. If the organization is owned and run by
christians why shouldn't they be able to choose who they
want as employees?

BH>Now, I have also seen jobs for "Christian truckdriver wanted" and "Born
BH>again carpenter".

Again, if the organization is owned and run by christians, why
can't they choose who they want?

BH>What absolutely galls me is that these ads are ILLEGAL IN CANADA and
BH>yet, Christians still get away with it!!!

Either they are legal in Canada or the Canadian Government isn't
very adept in upholding their own laws in this regard.

BH>What is the difference if the person applying is Jewish, or atheist or
BH>Moslem or whatever? Either you have the experience and the
BH>qualifications or you DON'T!!!

If the organization is owned and run by christians who want their
employees to teach christianity then they should have a right to
this kind of employee.

BH>NOTE TOO: that the first qualification is to be Christian--the rest
BH>appear to be negotiable!

The guy who owns the business calls the shots.

BH>Can you imagine the bloody uproar that would ensue if I was to
BH>advertise:
BH>
"Wanted: Must be Native and untainted by
BH> Christianity. No Jews, Moslems or Hindus need
BH> apply. Skilled leather craftsperson."

BH>THINK ABOUT IT, PEOPLE!!!

Looks fine to me. If the own wants this he has the right.

Hmmm... Guess you haven't been to Calvary Chapel. There, people dress
any way they want to dress. People of all ages attend. There is some
good Christian Rock music (which the Business Section of the LA Times
today said is making lots of money), and a preacher who is humorous

he has something subtantive to say and says it in an entertaining

Oh, and they serve no noodles in the lobby.

No. Salvation is offered to all. Based on the manner in

one could misconstrue the message.

God is not generally in the business of bailing out

MB>pot" we call "American" tends to do that to cultures. There are
MB>probably more traditional, kosher-keeping Jews in Israel than in
MB>anyplace else in the world, and even there, I'm not sure they are
MB>in the majority.

This is probably true. Although, I can remember waiting at
Kennedy airport on my way to Israel. I had never seen so
many Orthodox Jews in my life in one place. These men in
black suits, beards, black hats, standing around all over
the place in the airport engaged in animated discussions.
I spent two months in Israel and never saw as many in one
location as I did at Kennedy. Of course, that was in 1973.
I'm sure things have changed dramatically since then in
this respect.

Assimilation sure has happened with the denomination I
grew up in. I grew up in a Mennonite Brethren Church
in San Jose, Calif. My parents had come from Nebraska.
Their parents had come from Russia. Back in Nebraska,
earlier this century, they were very much like the
Amish: no cars, no dancing, no skating in a skating
rink, no going to movies, etc. etc. Basically, as
little contact with the outside world as possible.
By the time I was growing up the only thing left
was no dancing or going to movies. Other than these,
one couldn't tell a Mennonite from anyone else in
the culture around them. Today, the ban against
dancing and movies is totally gone.

AJ>Yes it does, but having Elvis think you're neat can add
AJ>bucks to your bank account. He's one generous guy.

There have been some pretty heavyweight scholars who
have become saved whose intellects were not reduced
in the least for having done so. C. S. Lewis is an
example. Even his detractors recognized this fact.
At least those who personally knew him knew this
fact.

Jim Staal, who knows now that a "bordello" isn't a Latin depot, said to
Marty Leipzig:

So, which lumpian Stall have I reached this time around?

-=> Quoting Marty Leipzig to Jim Staal <=-

ML> Jimbo, is this really you or someone just as ignorant?

JS> I really despise your new 'intro' lines...

ML> How unfortunate. Now, answer the question. Is it you or someone
ML> else in Wyoming who's just as ignorant?

JS> I know nothing of this 'wyoming' of which you speak. I live in
JS> Grandville, Michigan.

That's because it's "Wyoming". And, you still did not answer
the question.

JS> In fact, I live in a post box, #171, Grandville,
JS> MI 49468-0171.

Damn. What with your being so tall and all, I'll wager that's a
mighty tight fit.

ML> I don't need a milkcrate, Comrade.

JS> So they tried to tell me. I would not believe it. I do not believe it.

ML> Who cares? You also believe every jot and tittle of the Bible.

JS> Why shouldn't I believe it? S'the truth...

So tell us all about the flood, Jimbo. Provide a little
evidence of the truth of that claim.

JS> I have seen no evidence of it...for _I_ am 6'7", 285lbs of

ML> No...this is just too easy...

JS> No, I ate a lot of corn flakes as a youthful Hollander...

Flakes.

It figures.

JS> well marbled
JS> Hollander...

ML> Particularly between the ears.

JS> Tsk...

Veritas.

ML> You know, Jimbo; you strike me as someone with a serious ego
ML> problem. I'm no psychiatrist (never claimed to be, in fact); but
ML> no one else in this forum ever trumpets about themselves as much
ML> as you.

JS> None _can_ measure up, can they...

To your insipid egomaniacal rantings? Nope, you're a blue ribbon
winner in that "class"

ML> Are we supposed to be intimidated or impressed?

JS> Neither. Merely amused, that's all...

You are rather amusing, however unintentional.

ML> We're neither.

JS> REally!? I thought you would be one of the 'better educated' [TM]
JS> your bro Fred Rice trumpets around here...

Fred is not my brother, as I have none. And, as I stated, we're
neither impressed nor intimidated by you; merely amused.

JS> Nah...you seem more of a man of _mere_ words...

Quote editing is verboten, Herr Staal. That _mere_ is an
addition of yours to the original, Chuckles. Styx doesn't take
lightly to that, you know.

ML> Yep. That's what they tell me at the gym.

JS>

Nope. Mengele is dead; you merely emulate him from the neck-up.

JS> 'picosecond'???

ML> It's a science term, Jimmy. My apologies, I should have
ML> realized that it would have flummoxed you completely.

JS> 'flummoxed'!? Is that some sort of ethnic idiom?

Nope. Yet another common word that completely vexes the
resident "English Major".

How quaint.

ML> Well, Jimbo; I am not wicked; nor am I atrocious; in fact, my
ML> wordsmithery reflects refinement and exemplary English.

JS> My my...you can wax eloquent if you desire...

ML> Jealous?

JS> Not at all. I am referred to 'Silver Tongued Jim Staal' even out of
JS> the bedroom, Marty...

I guess you'd get that from licking out stainless steel
urinals.

JS> But I do and there is, therefore you did...in my eyes...

ML> "...in your eyes..."? So who appointed you arbiter of all things
ML> sacred and profane?

JS> Oh, not I, sir, but rather, the holy writ, The Bible.

This "Holy Writ" also says that bats are birds.

So much for the credence of that reference.

JS> No, I'm referring to the personal attack on the individual...

ML> For someone so allegedly big, your skin seems definitely
ML> monomolecular in thickness.

JS> Not at all, sir. You attack one's intellect, which is far beyond mere
JS> flesh wounds.

In order to attack your intellect, I have to be quite the
sharpshooter.

ML> Hey, what do you expect from a "heinous blasphemer", Jimbo?

ML> Sauce, Herr Staal, for the goose.

JS> In other words, they are mere juvenile retribution? I can accept that.

Not at all. They are mere words that cause you enormous
anxiety. I call that "fun".

ML> True, it has progressed. I before thought you were a boor. Now
ML> I am sure of it.

JS> Tsk. Just when I thought you were getting to know me better...

I know you far too well as it stands. Getting to know you
better is like getting better acquainted with a sewer rat.

ML> Of course it isn't. It came from you, therefore it couldn't be.

JS> Ahhh...and once again you abuse my good nature and fine sense of
JS> humor. That's OK, I can take it...like a _man_!

Jimmy, you really shouldn't leave straight lines like that...

Gwenny the Pooh, who knows now that a "bordello" isn't a Latin depot, said
to Marty Leipzig:

GtP> Heilsa, Marty!

Tunk Gwerfya, Gwen!

GtP> While bumping down stairs after Christopher Robin, Gwenny the Pooh
GtP> heard Marty say to Gwenny:

CM>>> No. Even with the old Yin & Yang, GOOD & EVIL. Good & Bad, both
CM>>> intertwine. You can not have one without the other. Those people
CM>>> wern't even Christians.

GtP>> Yin and Yang are NOT good and evil, but positive and negative (as
in
GtP>> electrical charge), male and female, etc.

ML> Exactly. Opposites. Like Christian and atheist. Or Christian
ML> and intelligent. Or Christian and coherent...

GtP>

Set 'em up and knock 'em down...

CM>>> Christian

GtP>> PAGAN

ML> Atheist.

GtP> Oh, no, don't tell me I've started something.

"Not another list, Franz?!?"

GtP>> Valhalla or Niflhel -- Which for you?

ML> Both, particularly during happy hour.

GtP> Be sure you find out EXACTLY what's in that cauldron of wisdom before
GtP> you take a drink.

Make mine a double.

ML> ... I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat
ML> vegetables.

GtP> ... I know my place in the food chain, I a PREDATOR!

"That's not lunch. That's something lunch would eat..."

Yup. Great thing about this country--anyone's allowed to
hold whatever personal view they choose, no matter how stupid.
And as a result, (I wish I could remember the SC judge who

Who's the Jimmy du jour today?

RJ> Especially since she clearly shows NO intention of rejecting
RJ> her Christianic beliefs.

JS> Her 'theology' demonstrates that in some ways she already has...

Good one. I guess I was wrong about you not having a
sense of humor. But there are degrees of wrongness, just
like there are degrees of humor. I think this is an area
where the margin remains small on both fronts.

JS> None of the above. It is more of the juvenile 'peer' thing where we
go
JS> with those of larger number, just to fit in, be cool...I'm sure _you_
JS> understand...

RJ> Hmm...One billion Christians in the world. A few million
RJ> atheists and agnostics. If Lynda wanted to "fit in" with the
RJ> larger group, why would she hang out on an echo where she's
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
RJ> in the minority?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
JS> It was obvious I referring to the echo...

And so was I, if you read the post.

JS> n'est-ce pas?

JS> Huh?

It's French, for "nicht wahr?"

... Well do you, punk?

Which one of the Many Faces Of Jim is in the driver's seat?

RJ> So if you say something really asinine, and then a few months
RJ> later you have total faith you never said such a thing, that
RJ> makes it true, doesn't it?

JS> I dunno. You gonna admit to this statement in a few months? Pretty

Hmmm...will I stand by what I said in a few months that I've
accused you of backpedaling on statements? I think I'm man
enough to do that. Would you like me to stand on a milkcrate
when I do? Do you really want me to take the "high ground"?
I mean, it's a hassle--I've got all those LPs and books stowed

Which one of you have I contacted this time?

RJ> How about we just start calling you a freethinker with a
RJ> decent streak observable without the use of an electron
RJ> microscope? Will you start acting like one? Or are you,
RJ> indeed, "selective about this"?

JS> Like Preston says, I'm selective about this...

Allrightee...so anyway, you're gonna be a thief if I call you
one? Why would you do that? Am I your god? Are you gonna
do something that your Yahweh COMMANDED you NOT to do, just
because some mere mortal gave you the suggestion? Why is that?
Is my corporeal presence _that_ much more powerful than the
stonecarved moral code you've allegedly sworn allegiance to,
that you'd override it for the sake of acting on some subcu-
taneous animal desire, because a heathen gave you sanction?

I'm touched. But nowhere near as much as your head seems to be.

ML> Indeed I did. Now, Herr Jackson; Russkaya or Belly Ice, which
ML> for you?

Which one would you recommend? I'm not much of a vodka drinker,
but I do know what quality spirit is. If it's got a flavor
(lemongrass sounds interesting) that would be neat. Now, if
you're heading to that Armenian area and you find whatever their
version of ouzo or arak is (I understand they call the good stuff
"tiger's milk") and obtained some of that nectar, you would have
a friend till the end.

But whatever won't put you out--you're the expert. S'prise me.

Now, I _did_ make that point only at the very beginning of
your post, rather than sticking it in the middle of the dis-
cussion at hand. I made a point of separating it from the

I'd probably have just made that the sum of my reply.

AS> You guys *scare* me.

Well, there's a few choice nuggets of wisdom in that musty
book of yours--that thing about "reaping what you sow" is
pretty good. That's why you see some believers here get a
hard ride, while others get the privilege of honest dialogue.
People that ask more questions than give answers often fall
into that latter category. Stick around--we really _do_ like
believers who ask questions. Fundies are just what we use

theology, as Creator of Everything, evil happened to be one of
those things? If he didn't create evil, it's something beyond
his sphere--which rules out the omniscient/omnipotent argument.

_problem_, just like the race issue is doing it now.

FR> Now I ___SUPPORT___ "human rights actions" in places like Bosnia
FR> except that I would rather like our government to clearly define their
FR> role.

rj> Agreed.

FR> I'm surprised.  }:-}

Why?

rj> Actions without objectives are stupid;

FR> Such as "fighting Communism?"

Such as "we're gonna go into Hanoi with guns a-blazin' so
Communism won't be a trouble to Saigon", rather than "uh, OK,
so guys--don't make a stink above the 17th parallel, okay?
Just play jungle tag for a couple decades...oh, and if ya
wanna sneak into Cambodia or Laos, just don't tell anyone."
"Fighting Communism" was the action, not an objective.

rj> They'll let the GOP plunge the social fabric into the shitter
rj> again, and we'll have another Great Society to follow it.

FR> Let's protest and spit on them!

I got a thick loogie saved up for Exon and Helms!

When I used to be a big poster on MENSA, I talked to a few
