Here's what Fredric Rice said to Dan Ceppa about Woofenden - Holographic:
FR> It's likely he has never read the particular book which describes his
FR> particularly bizarre beliefs and thus had not known what to call it.
FR> He knows now, however.
If you are talking about _The Holographic Universe_, no, I have not read
it.
But I had a teacher once who was particularly interested in that theory
and
spoke a lot about it. It's on my reading list--I just haven't gotten to
it yet.
FR> Have you ever gotten him to state what his "theory" is outright? Or
FR> was it all the typical vague, ill-defined, unspecific Goatshit?
I've been stating it all along, Fredric. You just haven't been listening
because you've been too busy setting up your own straw men about concrete
pillows, holographic universes, etc. Why do you find it so hard to _listen_
to
what other people are saying?
dc> He can't, as he also claims to be an xian, I think.
FR> I don't recall him ever saying that.
You haven't been listening.
FR> He does seem to think there are gods, however.
Not gods (plural); a single God. Please listen carefully, Fredric.
FR> A traditionalist Holographic Universe Weenie will state,
FR> however, that there are gods for those people who believe in
FR> them but not for those who don't.
Gee whiz. I must not be a traditional Holographic Universe Weenie. I believe
there is a God for everyone. However, some choose not to believe in that
God.
No please repeat what I just said so we all know that you heard it.
dc> What he appears to be doing is the Brawley routine of showing
dc> that a 'god' must exist.
FR> Otherwise he has to die like everyone else.
I'll repeat to you my challenge to Dan: produce a message in which I claimed
that a god must exist. Produce your evidence, or stop making the claim.
Stating
my belief in God is not the same as making a claim that God must exist in
the
sense that the word "claim" is used here in this echo.
Maybe you should try listening once in a while, Fredric.

Here's what Fredric Rice said to Robert Curry about Quote:
LW> What are my professed convictions, David?
DR> The absurd belief that human thought and conviction can change
DR> reality.
rc> Well, don't you think that sometimes they can?
FR> Only when acted upon.
David,
I missed the original reply (which I think was yours) the first time around.
But the replies from Robert and Fredric do well enough at representing my
own
views on the subject.
I never argued, or even presented a theory arguing, that people could change
"physical" reality by a pure act of thought or will. That was a
misunderstanding made by several others in the echo, and promptly corrected
by
me. Unfortunately, only a few of those making this mistake listened to my
correction, and the error snowballed. So the discussion of this straw man
continues apace.

Hello Nate!
Nate Cookson wrote in a message to Martin Goldberg:

MG> "abortions cause cancer" department was laughable
MG> at best.

butcher the words.
NC> ROTFL !!!!
Sure, roll on the floor as much as you like - holy rollers
are not alien to us - but invest in a grammar book before
you approach Dr Goldberg again.
We all know he is a peculiar typist, BUT we also know
he is not bulling - so he can afford to slide lightly
over the 'proper usage' and still be respected.
Your naive 'breast cancer' article was, however, pathetic.

RC>> I saw you mention that you are reading *Losing Faith in Faith*

RC> Funny, that isn't the concluding section in the copy I've been

MH> Hmmm ... perhaps it's been revised. I borrowed a fairly old copy.
MH> Is that section in there at all?
The edition loaned to me is a first printing, copyright 1992, which
contains the following nine sections.
Part 1: Losing Faith
Part 2: Finding Freethought
Part 3: Re-examining the "Good Book"
Part 4: Critiquing Christianity
Part 5: Spreading the Best News
Part 6: Separating State and Church
These last three consist of only one chapter each.
Part 7: Exposing Christian Morality ("Is the Bible a Good Moral Guide?")
Part 8: History or Myth?
Part 9: A Match Not Made in Heaven
MH> Some of the Bible "errors" or contradictions that he lists
MH> I *still* find fairly easily explained. Others, though, I feel
MH> relieved not having to do mental gymnastics over anymore.
Ah. Well, I happen to enjoy mental gymnastics, myself, but not as
a means of defending any preselected dogma.

JB>> If the symbol representing lack of number in the range
JB>> of number is a number,
RC> "Zero" does not represent "lack of number," John. It is itself
RC> a number, an additive identity element.
JB> I've argued the "character of zero" at length with
JB> mathematicians in other echoes, the upshot of which was we
JB> parted in disagreement, hence I've still got my original
JB> opinion. I'm arguing here from their side.
You are more likely confused and accidentally misrepresenting
their side, John.
Exactly who was it that claimed zero represents "lack of number?"
JB> _My_ actual position is that Zero is _not_ a number.
Your position exposes your ignorance on the matter.
JB> Imho, "zero" is either a place-holder (indicating "lack
JB> of ones" or "lack of tens" etc.)
The NUMERAL zero is generally used as a place holder, yes.
Please do not confuse the numeral with the number.
JB> or the centerpoint of the number line,
Here, what you are thinking of is an origin point.
JB> but not itself a "number."
You are correct in recognizing that a numeral is not a number, and
in recognizing that a point on a line is not a number. What I would
suggest at this juncture is to turn that around to recognize
also that the number zero is not a numeral used as a place holder,
nor is the number zero an origin point on a line.
JB> Calling zero a number is equivalent to my mind, to calling
JB> "nothing" _something_.
The number zero is not "nothing." It is a concept. It is furthermore
a _cardinal_ number, i.e., one that answers the question, "How many?"
How many fingers are on your hand? Five.
Now cut off the fingers one by one, each time asking and answering
the same question. Four, three, two, one, and finally zero. Does
zero mean "nothing?" Of course not! It only means that you have no
fingers left after amputating them all.
Zero is something, after all: it is the cardinality of an empty set.
JB> I get the same crappy arguments against my position when
JB> arguing a "geometric" POINT that has no background space.
JB> Like several other things in the precepts of math, defining
JB> a "point" is a Catch-22: you define "point" by "line"
JB> and "line" by "point(s),"
Traditional, but hardly necessary.
JB> and it seems no math-type person is willing to call a point
JB> a point unless it's seen _against_a_background_space_.
Or, more genrally speaking, without being embedded in a manifold
of a higher dimension. It isn't really required, as mentioned before.
JB> (*grin*) You think "zero" is "well-defined?" Haw!
Would you care for a reference?
If I were particularly nasty, I could always send you to Russell
and Whitehead's _Principia Mathematica_ (wherein they eventually
get around to proving that one plus one equals two, after a couple
hundred pages of rigorous and painstaking goundwork).

DC>That was my guess, too! Then again, I'm MAD!
i took it as Quid = quibble -- trifling -- or one -- part of --
me = me or mean - part of one or one
An_x_ius = anx_ious = worried or -ane- part of 1 or 1
Sum = as a math total = summary of -me=1of1=sum
then played around with it, till it sounded right.Giveing preference
to the 1 idea and the me, bit. Quibble ? me ? worry ? if sum =0 not
type of thing. using a 0 as no or not or not likely . Since the sum
didn't seem to fit, it assume no-value or nothing.
So kind of like a 'minor worry? me? is/nothing!'. Got the words
wrong, the general idea, right ...... half right
is better then nothing. I guess right for a change, besides i
wantted some fun with abuseing the english language. Going for that
Hardy/Al effect.

Due to liveing too long, I have come to a few True Test of Love.
One is moveing, another is loseing a job, the other is a close friend or
family who dies.If some where along the line you don't kill each other
or fight, then ,likely you have true love. Then too, thats me and
Mistress J. I've moved 6 times, she move 3 times, since we have knowen
each other. I've had friends and family die, she has had friends die,
we both have lost jobs, due to closer of the company. If any thing can
act as a test of love/careing for each other, then there is at least a
few. The real acid test is yet to come. Wait till your love goes through
the change of life, and feels she is no longer loveable as a women. This
is the worst, yet to come.

CJ>> Many thanks for the informative cross-post on High/Low
CJ>> German!
DM> You might enjoy that particular echo. It is all about words,
DM> word origins, and the like. It's # 2181 here on Metronet.
I probably would. Time, though. I'm trying to steel
myself to the notion of full-fledged I-net access when I can't
deal with all the possible RIME and FIDO conferences of my
interest. I bitch about not being able to post to RIME here, but
it's a forced blessing, I think. Besides 10 other
conferences/echoes, I sleuth alt.misc.writing and
rec.arts.sf.written for market/computer-info stuff for the list.
The first in particular has a quite unfavorable noise ratio, but
the signal has quite valuable information.
Bad as the flame wars here get, it's nothing like what is
now going on with alt.misc.writing. There were periodic postings
in groups of 3 by Woodside Literary Agency, which "expanded" from
New York to Marcos Island, Florida. Huh? A dead give-away was
that they were asking to see poetry and short story mss, which no
agent is interested in seeing because the probability of sales is
so slim and the pay (before their commission) is usually so small.
Of course, Woodside asks for money up front, and then
refers you to a manuscript "doctor" (Edit, Ink) well-known for
having kick-back arrangements with disreputable publishers and
agents--i.e., they don't take your ms after having Edit, Ink work
it over.
And the most obvious clue, of course, is that Woodside
spams every conceivable newsgroup in sight (e.g.,
alt.tasteless.jokes).
The upshot, at this stage, is that Woodside has selected
one of the writers alerting people to this scam for special
treatment. They mail-bombed her address; they mail-bombed her
husband's account; and the latest word is that they were
mail-bombing her (legitimate) agent's site. On top, Woodside was
forging her address to post bogus trolls to newsgroups. (To keep
this somewhat on topic) one such was a YOU ARE MORONS post to
alt.atheism. . . .

an eternal hell was useful to keep the "simple" Christians in
ethical and dogmatical line. He himself thought that, through
reincarnation, even Satan would eventually be saved.

It is hard enough to write, even to write badly, and so much

that the bait of approval from an "agent" must be a powerful tool
for separating the naive from their money.
CJ> And the most obvious clue, of course, is that Woodside

CJ> The upshot, at this stage, is that Woodside has selected

David - Trivia info: Shortest verse in the Bible is... "Jesus wept."
I am sure he wept over all the suffering you brought to my attention.
Is it "Christ-like" to weep over suffering. It is not Christ-like to
kill.
All your examples are Man's cruel acts towards Man.
Jesus (Christ) gives us no such examples of Himself acting in such
manner.
The only thing Christ-like about such torture, is that Man did the same
thing to Jesus.
Thank you

Exactly to whom (or to what) would an atheist pray to?
I would think, that an atheist would require a lot of faith, to pray for
something.
